Grade One-Growth

Unit Understanding
Plants like animals have certain requirements in order to grow and stay healthy.

Essential Questions

How do we know when something is growing?

ECLC-Materials

Materials

Unit Understanding

• Our world is made up of different materials that have
different properties and uses

Essential Questions

• What are things made of?
• How do materials change?
• Why do we use different materials?

With all this in mind we asked our Eco friends to come and teach us!

Our friends from Papaya Academy, PCF, INVISIBLE and TrasheBolsas are experts at re-using trash creatively! It is important for them to consider the properties of materials when designing their products.

So on December 9th, each class attended the Materials Expo. There were exhibitions of products and raw materials, demonstrations of how the products are made and students even had a go at making things themselves.

Our ECo friends are coming to school!

Many grades in ES have been investigating topics that our ECo friends are experts in!

Our friends from Papaya Academy, PCF, Trashebolsas and INVISIBLE have been coming to school to share their skills and knowledge with us as well as to….sell their eco-friendly products!

Upcoming events!
Our ECo friends from PCF will be selling their products outside the ES canteen on February 25th from 8:00-4:00. They will also be presenting and doing demonstrations at the Grade 4 assembly from 12:45-1:30 in the Little Theatre.

We hope that by meeting our Service Learning Partners we will be able to raise awareness about:

  • how our actions impact on our environment
  • how trash affects plant growth
  • how we can re-use our trash in a way that benefits our environment
  • the interconnectedness of life
  • child rights and importance of taking action
  • Past events
On December 9th, ECLC explored the properties of the recyclable materials that are used to create bags, jewelery and christmas decorations.

Grade One investigated factors that affect plant growth. They found lots of trash when they dug up the soil to build the garden last year.  Watch this video to find out….Trash into Treasure

This year, the community gardeners noticed similar problems….

On December 10th, Grade One students met our ECo friends to find out how trash can be re-used creatively.

Grade 3’s are being Citizens in Action! Some teams designed strategies to collect materials that were given as Christmas gifts to our friends from Papaya Academy, PCF, INVISIBLE and TrasheBolsas.

ISM Community Gardens Project

In 2009 students, teachers and parents from ES, MS and HS all joined hands and built our ISM Community Garden! Since then we have been learning more about plants, making friends from all over our school and solving problems together.

Service Partners

By learning more about the people in our community we are able to help each other solve problems like trash, floods and poverty. Click here to find out more about our Service Partners, who they are, what they do and how you can get involved!
